Following is her essay that was a requirement for receiving the award.

"My experience at East High School" by Jessica R. Brown

"I started my journey at East High School at the end of third quarter of my sophomore year;  I had been homeschooled for 7 years before.  I was a little apprehensive about high school, since I had not been in a school building for years.  My first day was confusing and I had no idea what general rules were, like asking to use the restroom and the fact that raising hands was optional; luckily, Natural Helpers walked me through my class schedule so that I would not get lost in the halls.  I did not know how well I would do in school, but, fortunately, I was determined and that is what helped me get the grades I truly desired.  East High School helped shape me as a person because of its diversity of people, the academic opportunities and the openness of its students.

East High School helped shape me as a person because of its diversity of people.  East High School has a wide range of ethnicities, which promotes acceptance from peers.  I was very lucky to join East because it helped me build on my previous knowledge that race does not matter.  Race is not the only point of diversity; students range in their knowledge of everything from the arts to science and math.  It can even be something as simple as the way people dress that make East diverse.

East High School helped shape me as a person because of the academic opportunities.  I was almost overwhelmed with all the great opportunities that East had;  there were choices from dual credit at Rock Valley College to after school tutoring.  I did not take advantage of these offers because I had to catch up on credits from the years that I was not in high school; nothing from my homeschool experience was transferrable.  I began getting A's as soon as I started high school; by the end of my first semester, I was so proud of my report card that I put it on the fridge and it is still there today.  I continue to receive good grades; in my entire high school career, I have received only two B's, the rest of course were A's.  This may sound like I'm gloating, but when you have worked as hard as I and many other students have, you deserve to talk about it.

East High School has shaped me as a person because of the openness of its students.  I have made many friends during my time at East.  My friendships have not only made me a scholar, but a kinder and more open person.  My peers at East have always welcomed me with open arms; they have helped me through tough times and will continue to be there for me.  I am truly grateful for not only my peer's support, but my teacher's as well.

I was, indeed, lucky that I fell into East High School's District.  If I had not gone to East, I would not have the friends and the academic standing that I do today.  Because of its diversity, academics and friendships, East High School has helped shape me as not only a person, but a leader.  I will never forget my time at East and the lessons I have learned."
